One of the Romanian largest city, Brasov is conveniently placed in the middle of the country, sorrounded by the Carpathian Mountains with the tops of Bucegi (2505 m) and Fagaras (2544 m) mountains. Named by the Germans Kronstadt, Brasov is a part of Transylvania, well known for its dense forests, medieval towns, lone castels on roky outcrops and of course the legend of Dracula.
A town with turbulent history, Brasov was colonised 800 years ago by Germans who significantly influenced it's cultural heritage. During the centuries, Romanians, Hungarians and and Germans have lived next to each other, all of them having important historical links with this region. In spite of the colonisation and the Turks ravaging, the Romanians have done a greate job preserving their culture, language and traditions.
Ascending Mount Tâmpa, situated in the middle of the city, you'll be able to make out different parts of Brasov: the German part of the town with red roofs crammed between straight streets surrounding the Concil Square (Piata Sfatului), the Romanian Schei, a combination of small streets, jumbled houses petering out towards the hills and the later addition to Brasov, the 18th and 19th century expansion and the flats and huge factories from the last 50 years.
